Heartstrings
Love is the greatest virtue as it controls the decisions we make in our lives, carving and shaping us into children of God. It saves us in the darkest times of our lives, pulling on our heartstrings while guiding us back onto the right path. This piece was inspired by my perception of how God’s love salvages our souls when we fall into a void of sin and disorientation. The monotone figure is used to portray us, devoid of emotions and purpose, unsure of where to go. It resembles a Greek statue – a symbol of the past that is now lifeless and left as a memory.
In contrast, the rich, red tones of flesh emphasise the raw love and passion God expresses to assure us of His will to bring us back to life. I chose a bold colour for the background as it accentuates the figure, allowing us to focus on it. The coils of flesh surrounding the figure are a metaphor to illustrate the way He catches us, slowly letting his warmth and comfort creep over our souls. I considered how I would feel to be in the same position as the figure, allowing me to better understand the extent of God’s everlasting love.
This piece is meant to have a dramatic appearance in order to evoke greater emotions and vividly put forth my thoughts while creating it. The intended message is that God is always present to guide us to eternal life, pulling on our heartstrings to remind us of the deep affection and fiery passion He holds for His people.
